42VIN regulator saves space in automation and avionics
Available in a 6.25 x 9.0 x 3.3mm BGA, the LTM8053 is a uModule step-down regulator from Linear Technology. It has up to 40V input voltage (42V maximum), which can safely operate from unregulated or fluctuating 12 to 36V input supplies in noisy environments, says the company, citing industrial robotics, factory automation and avionics systems.
The device houses a switching regulator controller, power switches, inductor and other supporting components in a compact BGA package. Only two capacitors and two resistors are required, for the LTM8053 to occupy approximately 150mm², compared with alternatives, requiring up to 250mm² and twice as many components, says the company.
Continuous output current of 6A peak, delivers 3.5A. The ‘share’ pin enables current sharing for parallel operation. The output voltage is adjustable with one resistor from 0.97 to 15V. One device generates common system bus voltages of 3.3, 5.0, 12 and 15V. The efficiency at 12VIN to 5VOUT is 90%. Output current of 3.5A up to 85 degree C is without a heatsink or airflow (12VIN to 5VOUT). Operating temperature range is -40 to +125 degree C.
