Amphenol ICC and TactoTek create automotive-grade in-mould connectors

Finnish company, TactoTek, develops and licenses in-mould structural electronics (IMSE) technology. It has partners with interconnect company, Amphenol to expand the latter’s MicroSpace connectors for automotive-grade in-mould connectors for smart surfaces in vehicles.

IMSE parts integrate printed electronics and electronic components within 3D injection moulded plastics. They combine structure, electronic functions, and cosmetics in single piece, seamless smart surfaces. TactoTek IMSE parts often connect to external system electronics or host systems.

“Standardised in-mould connectors further simplify integrating IMSE smart surfaces in all types of products, whether vehicles, appliances or smart home solutions,” explains Paavo Niskala, senior vice president of Research & Development at TactoTek. “In addition, the Amphenol MicroSpace connector enables high speed, automated IMSE production processes for faster cycle times and high yields,” he notes.

Combining TactoTek’s IMSE with Amphenol ICC’s automotive grade MicroSpace and Duflex crimp technology opens up many design possibilities, while offering the compact LV214 severity-2 compatible MicroSpace connector family with the industry Duflex crimp technology, or “accelerating transformational technologies like TactoTek’s IMSE with proven interconnect technology”, says Jerome Petit, product line manager at Amphenol ICC.

TactoTek develops and licenses IMSE technology. The company works directly with OEMs and brands to develop production-ready prototypes. Mass production is done by TactoTek licensees.

TactoTek provides injection moulded structural electronics (IMSE), integrating printed circuitry and electronic components into 3D injection moulded plastics. IMSE use cases include human machine interfaces (HMI), connectivity and electronic styling features for automotive, smart home, appliances and other markets.

TactoTek develops and industrialises IMSE technology, creates mass production-ready IMSE prototypes, and licenses IMSE technology for third party IMSE part design and global mass production.

Amphenol ICC is a division of Amphenol, which provides interconnect solutions for the information, communications and commercial electronics markets. Amphenol ICC designs and manufactures a wide range of connectors as well as cable assemblies for diverse applications including server, storage, data centre, networking, industrial, business equipment and automotive markets.
