AI is revolutionising medical technology, says Innodisk, in diagnostics, patient care, and emergency rooms. AI works through enormous data sets to support medical staff but the technology requires sufficient computational powers.

Innodisk offers a portfolio of industrial-grade DRAM modules that have guaranteed long-term supply. It includes DDR4, DDR3 and DDR2 modules available in the same robust form factors. For extreme cases, conformal coating and anti-sulfuration measures are available to further protect the memory module.

For the design of many medical systems, it is necessary to factor in electromagnetic interference (EMI). A special circuit design with purpose-built firmware algorithms is necessary and Innodisk has customised modules with anti-magnetic properties as well as with rigid data security measures for such medical devices. Innodisk can provide solid state drives (SSDs) that offer extensive endurance and the robustness required of IoT devices in a medical setting.

One of the challenges of IoT is monitoring the many devices involved in the system. In one such case, Innodisk modified the cloud-based management tool iCAP to not only monitor the onboard component lifespan and status, but also that of the batteries in the various portable devices used at the hospital. This way, all devices are kept under one umbrella that is easily accessed through any computer, phone or tablet with a compatible browser.

Adding devices means additional ways of communication between those devices. Innodisk’s expansion cards allow medical devices to easily add new ports that offer additional LAN, display, PoE, USB capabilities.

RS Components adds Renesas Synergy MCUs and development kits

New to RS Components (RS) distribution list are the Renesas Synergy MCUs and development kits from Renesas Electronics which are now shipping from RS in the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions.

The Renesas Synergy Platform is a fully qualified MCU hardware and software platform that is said by RS to enable faster time to market for a range of wireless and wired embedded IoT applications.

Based on the popular Arm Cortex-M CPU architecture, Synergy MCUs mix-and-match more than 70 different core functions and peripheral components, offering a wide choice of specifications.

The Renesas Synergy Platform offers pin-to-pin compatibility between different MCUs with the same package, as well as peripheral and register compatibility across the entire MCU portfolio. This enables a high degree of software reuse when scaling between devices and applications, reduces PCB layout effort, and increases manufacturing efficiency.

The Synergy family includes four MCU series offering secure connectivity and scaling levels of analogue capability.

The S1 ultra-low power series, based on a 32 MHz Cortex-M0 processor core, is aimed at applications requiring long battery life and standby time, and robust safety.

The S3 high-efficiency MCU series, running a 48 MHz Cortex-M4 core, delivers power-sensitive applications that need advanced timing control, safety self-testing, segment LCDs and capacitive touch control.

For more demanding control applications, the 120 MHz Cortex-M4-based S5 high-integration series offers large memory capacity, serial memory expansion, highly accurate analogue capabilities, 2D colour LCD graphics, and additional safety functions.

The S7 high-performance MCU series, with a 240 MHz Cortex-M4 core, can handle multiple high-speed secure connectivity channels simultaneously, drive a sophisticated colour display, perform high-precision control tasks, and sense analogue signals with high accuracy.

The Synergy Software Package (SSP) is a complete software framework designed to simplify complex application development. SSP comprises shared APIs, a commercial real-time operating system, a middleware suite, and libraries and low-level drivers qualified and maintained by Renesas.

Two development environments are provided: e2 studio integrated solution development environment with GCC compiler and automatic code generation, and IAR Embedded Workbench to generate compact, fast running code.

Other software tools include the TraceX visual runtime performance monitor, GUIX Studio for drag-and-drop graphical user interface design, and the synergy standalone configurator, for intuitive configuration of microcontroller functions, software assignments and operation modes.

RS offers a range of Synergy development kits enabling access to all MCU pins. These allow design engineers to evaluate specific functions alongside supporting circuitry, use Pmod connectors to accelerate PCB prototyping, connect via Ethernet, USB, CAN bus, RS-232 or RS-485, and access additional peripherals.

Mobile-security SoC from STM combines NFC controller, secure element and eSIM

STMicroelectronics has unveiled its integrated mobile-security solution, the ST54J, a system-on-chip containing a near-field communication (NFC) controller, secure element, and eSIM.

The SoC is claimed by the company to deliver performance-boosting integration for mobile and IoT devices. The added benefit of ST’s software-partner ecosystem is said to help promote smoother user experiences in mobile payments and e-ticketing transactions, as well as more convenient, remote, mobile provisioning to support multiple operator subscriptions.

“As mobile devices require more security and connectivity in an ever-shrinking PCB footprint, the ST54J will help designers simplify assembly and reduce bill-of-material costs,” said Laurent Degauque, marketing director, secure microcontroller division, STMicroelectronics.

“ST’s established ecosystem of third-party software partners provides access to eSIM and eSE solutions that are EMVCo and GSMA-SAS certifiable and tested for interoperability and validated with numerous mobile network operators, custom profiles and application providers worldwide,” she said.

Spearheading the fourth generation of ST’s embedded secure element family, the single-chip ST54J is said to ensure faster contactless interaction than a discrete chipset by eliminating performance-limiting off-chip data exchanges between the secure element and NFC controller.

In addition, a faster, state-of-the-art core for each function further accelerates contactless transactions with mobile terminals and enhances roaming by supporting secure-element cryptographic protocols used worldwide, including FeliCa and MIFARE.

Packaging and design flexibility comes saving space by integrating three key functions onto one chip.

In addition, ST used its NFC booster technology to enhance the performance of the NFC controller, allowing it to establish robust contactless connections with a small-size antenna. This, in turn, allows designers even more generous freedom to manage space inside the device and minimise the thickness of new smartphone generations, says the company.

ST delivers the ST54J to customers with NFC firmware and the GlobalPlatform V2.3 secure element operating system, which provides best-in-class cryptographic performance and optimum eSIM interoperability.

The OS also allows flexible configurations to support eSE-only or combined functionality.

Octavo launches complete 1GHz computer in a 27mm package

The OSD335x C-SiP, an integrated 1GHz Arm Cortex-A8 computing platform, has been released by Octavo Systems. It integrates the required components for a computing system into a single IC package that is about the size of a standard Lego block.

The newest addition to the OSD335x family, the OSD335x C-SiP, is a complete system containing the 1GHz Arm Cortex-A8 Sitara AM335x processor from Texas Instruments, up to 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 4KB EEPROM, two power supplies, up to 16GB of eMMC non-volatile flash memory, a MEMS oscillator, and more than 100 passive components into its single 27mm X 27mm 400 ball BGA package.

Through the integration of OSD335x C-SiP, many of the repetitive and tedious tasks associated with designing a computing system are removed, says Octavo. For example, laying out DDR3 memory interfaces and power sequencing is no longer required.

Also, any concerns about electromagnetic interference caused by the layout of the oscillator are alleviated. “We estimate that using the OSD335x C-SiP will enable designers to get a system working in half the time required to design a discrete solution.” said Erik Welsh, application engineering manager, Octavo Systems. “This is the time they can spend refining or adding new features to further differentiate their product, or they can simply get to market quicker.”

Besides simplifying the design of an embedded system, the OSD335x C-SiP is also said to be about 50% smaller than an equivalent system built with individual components. This allows designers to shrink their designs, save cost on their PCBs or add processing power to form factors where before this may not have been possible.

This computing platform is suited to a range of applications, such as building automation, industrial control, consumer goods and Internet of Things. It can also help simplify the sourcing process and supply chain management.

The datasheet can be downloaded and samples are available now. The OSD335x C-SiP will be available to the general market by the end of the year.

The first variation will be built on the AM3358 processor, have 512MB of DDR3 memory, and 4 GB eMMC. It will be available in both industrial and commercial temperature ranges.

Mouser takes stocks of Arduino MKR Shields

Three shields suitable for industrial communications systems now number among the range of Arduino MKR shields supplied by Mouser Electronics.

The Arduino MKR 485, MKR CAN and MKR ETH are designed to allow the development boards with an MKR form factor to connect to industrial automation and automotive systems using various communication protocols.

The Arduino MKR 485 shield enables engineers to connect their MKR boards to any of the industrial systems that use the RS 485 protocol. This shield can also be used to extend the serial wired communication over a longer range.

The shield supports half duplex and full duplex, with or without biasing and termination, and master/slave configuration. An onboard, three-way DIP switch allows simple configuration.

With the shield, Mouser says that engineers can tap into almost any legacy industrial system, such as industrial PLCs, controllers, drives, and human-machine interfaces. Older industrial systems such as machinery, heating systems, and conveyors can be turned into Internet of Things devices through a serial connection using the shield.

The Arduino MKR CAN shield connects MKR boards to a controller area network (CAN) bus. Based on a Microchip Technology MCP2515 CAN controller with SPI interface, the MKR CAN shield can help simplify interfacing with industrial systems and automotive applications. An onboard switch allows engineers to enable or disable the termination resistor.

This shield also enables engineers to develop applications related to smart vehicles, autonomous cars, and drones and allows development boards to connect directly to industrial-grade sensors, motors and displays.

The Arduino MKR ETH shield enables an MKR board to connect to the internet using Ethernet instead of a wireless connection, which Mouser says enables a faster and more reliable connection in industrial environments.

The shield is based on a WIZnet W5500 embedded Ethernet controller, which supports up to eight simultaneous socket connections and provides an IP stack capable of both TCP and UDP.

In addition to Ethernet connectivity via the Arduino Ethernet 2 library, the shield includes a microSD card slot with the ability to read and write to a microSD card using the Arduino SD library.
