Compact automotive-grade buck DC/DC converters aid safe assisted driving

Automotive-grade synchronous secondary buck DC/DC converters from Rohm are offered in a leadless package with wettable flanks. This makes them very suitable for using them in applications like radars, cameras and sensors which can be used for assisted driving, says the company.

The BD9S series (BD9S400MUF-C, BD9S300MUF-C, BD9S200MUF-C, BD9S100NUX-C, BD9S000NUX-C) converters power supply ICs have an enable function to adjust the start-up time and a ‘pgood’ output indication to improve system functional safety.

Operating temperature range is -40 to +125 degrees C.

Vehicle accident prevention systems and self-driving cars require sub-systems including sensors and camera modules, which raises power consumption. At the same time, it is necessary to decrease the component size and quantities to reduce vehicle weight.

The BD9S series supports output currents from 0.6 to 4.0A. It is offered in what is claimed to be industry-leading 2.0 and 3.0mm2 space-saving packages that deliver high efficient operation. Power conversion efficiency is claimed to be best-in-class efficiency of 90 per cent (at 3.6V input/1.8V output). The current mode control ensures fast response to load transients and combined with a fixed 2.2MHz switching frequency, it prevents interference in the AM band. The higher frequency allows use of smaller external components, which contributes to a higher degree of miniaturisation and power savings, says Rohm.

The ICs can be used in advanced driving assistance systems (ADAS) sensors, cameras, and radars, drive recorders and other automotive applications requiring high efficiency, superior reliability, and a compact form factor.
