Compact thin film power inductors resist strain in automotive circuits

Increased robustness against mechanical stress is provided in the TFM201210ALMA inductors due to the resin electrode structure. TDK has developed the downsized, compact, thin-film power inductors for automotive power circuits.

The inductors measure 2.0 x 1.25 x 1.0mm and operate over a wide temperature range of -55 to +150 degrees C.

Developed for automotive use, the TFM201210ALMA inductors comply with AEC-Q200 Rev D. The mounting area is downsized approximately 22 per cent in comparison to TDK’s TFM201610ALMA (2.0 x 1.6 x 1.0mm).

Demand has recently increased in electronic control unit (ECU) mounting for the electrification of various automotive controlling functions, autonomous driving, information communication and other purposes. Downsized inductors for power circuits save space in a mounting substrate, at a time when advanced driver assistance systems continue to advance, resulting in an increase in the number of components typically used in system architectures.

The TFM201210ALMA inductors are constructed using TDK’s proprietary metallic magnetic material as its core material. They are claimed to be robust against mechanical stress, such as vibrations and shocks due to the resin electrode structure.

Mass production will begin in August 2021.

TDK was established in 1935 to commercialise ferrite, a key material in electronic and magnetic products. TDK’s portfolio features passive components such as ceramic, aluminium electrolytic and film capacitors, as well as magnetics, high-frequency, and piezo and protection devices. The portfolio also includes sensors and sensor systems such as temperature and pressure, magnetic, and MEMS sensors. In addition, TDK provides power supplies and energy devices, marketed under the product brands TDK, Epcos, InvenSense, Micronas, Tronics and TDK-Lambda. TDK focuses on demanding markets in automotive, industrial and consumer electronics, and information and communication technology. The company has a network of design and manufacturing locations and sales offices in Asia, Europe, and in North and South America.
