Component carriers can replace flexible PCBs

Component carriers that can be used directly with electronic components in linear measuring systems have been developed by Harting. They can eliminate manual assembly and replace flexible PCBs to increase precision and reduce assembly costs, says the company.

The component carriers have measuring sensors for detecting position and serve as a connecting element between a PCB and electronic components (such as LEDs, ICs, photo–diodes or sensors).

The measuring sensors of a scanning head for position detection, for example on a linear slide with guide rails, are often mounted on to flexible PCBs. The magnetic, optical or inductive systems record the exact position of the slide. To do this, the sensors must be positioned  at a 90 degree angle. Precise mounting improves the accuracy of the measurement results and a second sensor is often installed in the measuring head for redundancy. The status of the evaluation electronics is displayed using LEDs which are mounted on to a flexible PCB.

Harting’s component carriers can replace the flexible PCB. The injection-moulded plastic body already provides very precise 90 degree angles for mounting the sensors. It also eliminates the need for time-consuming manual assembly of the flexible PCB. In addition, says Harting, the sensors are positioned more precisely. The component carriers also allow the width of the sensor modules to be reduced to less than 8.0mm, adds the company.

The component carriers with the assembled electronic components are supplied in a blister pack for further processing in surface mount assembly facilities. The soldered components are secured with an adhesive so that they cannot detach from their position while in the reflow oven.

Harting 3D-MID is a business unit of the Harting Technology Group, headquartered in Espelkamp, Germany. It offers the complete value chain for 3D-MID technologies from a single source, including development / prototyping of customer-specific products, injection moulding, laser direct structuring, metallisation, assembly and connection technology, as well as final inspection. The core business is the production of mechatronic components for automobile manufacturing, industry, medical technology and sensor systems. Harting says it is the largest supplier of 3D-MID components outside Asia.
