D series connectors replace autoclave models in medical devices

For use in autoclave-compatible medical devices, Smiths Interconnect has developed a high reliability D Series connector. It is a cost-effective alternative to autoclave-compatible connectors, confirms Smiths.

The medical device industry continues to develop more disposable and cost-effective solutions yet the demand remains for high reliability connectivity options and in particular products that are suitable for autoclave sterilisation. The market also demands that products are scalable.

Smiths Interconnect’s D Series is designed to withstand up to 20 autoclave cycles. Using a high strength polymer, the D series is selectively loaded with up to 25 hyperboloid contacts, to conform to most device requirements. The system side panel mount receptacle has Hypertac sockets and provides a high mating cycle life (up to 100k cycles). The male pin plug on the device side ensures reliability coupled with minimal expense, claims Smiths.

According to Smiths, the D Series also provides design flexibility in medical device without sacrificing any performance requirements critical to innovative medical devices.

D Series connectors are suited for use in electro-physiology catheters, patient monitors, MRIs, intervascular ultrasounds, defibrillators, infusion pumps and laboratory equipment.

Smiths Interconnect provides electronic components, subsystems, microwave and radio frequency products that connect, protect and control critical applications in the commercial aviation, defence, space, medical, rail, semiconductor test, wireless telecommunications and industrial markets.

Smiths Interconnect is part of Smiths Group, a technology group delivering products and services for the medical, security and defence, general industrial, energy and space and commercial aerospace markets worldwide. Smiths Group employs approximately 22,000 people in over 50 countries.
