Dual colour and IR diode replace two leaded diodes

To save space in wearable devices and medical patient monitoring systems, a dual-colour red and IR emitting diode is designed to save space. Vishay Semiconductors offers the diode in a compact 2.0 x 2.0 x 0.87mm package.

The VSMD66694 features wavelengths of 660nm (red) and 940nm (IR) and is built on SurfLight technology for what the company says is best-in-class radiant power of 9.5 and 8.5mW, respectively.

For space-constrained devices such as smart watches and fitness bands, the diode can replace two leaded diodes with one component in a surface-mount package that can be combined with any custom-designed lens system. The narrow spectral bandwidth of 20 and 660nm and balanced radiant power at red and IR wavelengths provides balanced signal levels for SpO2 and pulse rate monitoring.

Switching times are 10ns and forward voltage is down to 1.4V. Suitable for high pulse current operation to 1A at 100micro sec, the device features a ±60 degree angle of half-intensity and operates over a temperature range of -25 to +85 degree C. Moisture sensitivity level (MSL) is 3 in accordance with J-STD-020 for a floor life of 168 hours. The diode supports lead-free reflow soldering, and is RoHS-compliant and halogen-free.
