Industrial IoT lab opens its doors for innovation and collaboration

Described as a space where companies can work together on Industrial IoT technologies and solutions, The NI Industrial IoT Lab opens its doors in Austin, Texas.

It is designed to foster interoperability with companies with expertise in communications protocols, controller hardware, I/O components, processing elements and software platforms. Companies sponsoring the lab include Analog Devices, Avnu Alliance, Cisco Systems, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Industrial Internet Consortium, Intel, Kalypso, OPC Foundation, OSIsoft, PTC, Real-Time Innovations, SparkCognition, Semikron, Viewpoint Systems and Xilinx.

Operational focus areas are microgrid control and communication, advanced control for manufacturing, and asset monitoring for heavy equipment. The microgrid demonstrator, an IIC testbed, focuses on open technologies that can help monitor and control a microgrid at the edge while maintaining scalability and interoperability between different vendors and protocol standards. The demonstrator has three programmable inverter cabinets that can simulate load profiles for a variety of conditions.

“A working showcase for new technologies can help all companies involved drive breakthrough innovations for utility grids, manufacturing, asset health monitoring and several other industries,” said Jamie Smith, business and technology director at NI.

The lab is a working showcase for Industrial IoT technologies and systems architectures. The lab has Industrial Internet Consortium (IIC) testbeds, industrial asset monitoring and Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) areas, to explore process and machine control where low communication latency and minimal jitter are critical to meeting closed-loop control requirements. The TSN demo, an IIC testbed, showcases technologies from over 12 companies working together on a TSN network.
