Infineon reduces footprint for Class D audio amplifier multi-chip module

MOSFET technology is the basis for Infineon Technologies’ Merus MA5332MS two-channel, analogue input, Class D audio amplifier multi-chip module.

According to Infineon, it is a powerful upgrade to its predecessor, offering the same or even higher output power than monolithic alternatives, without a heatsink and 50 per cent less footprint. In the 100 to 400W per channel range, the MA5332MS is suitable for consumer products such as home theatres, soundbars, sub-woofers, and mini-component systems. It is also suitable for professional applications, like active speakers, active studio monitors, guitar amplifiers, aftermarket car and marine audio amplifiers.

It is supplied in a compact 7.0 x 7.0mm2 42-pin QFN package which integrates a dual-channel PWM controller, a high-voltage gate driver and four low RDS(on) MOSFETs. The RDS(on) class D output stage (24.4 mOhm typical) enables it to be able to deliver two 100W at 4 Ohm operating without a heatsink or two 200W at 4 Ohm with a small 8 degrees C per W heatsink.

MA5332MS offers differential or single-ended input and multiple output configuration options, single-ended, bridge-tied load and parallel single-ended, using a single or split power supply. Enabling a single ended topology as an alternative to a bridge-tied load model allows for reduced bus capacitors and output low-pass filters, explained Infineon.

The integrated multi-chip module also integrates protection circuitry for functions such as over-current, over-temperature and under-voltage protection with self-reset capability. An internal logic scheme controls soft-start operation to reduce click and pop noise. The improvements to the MA5332MS reduce bill of material (BoM) cost and thermal management concerns, said Infineon, while providing more space for the industrial design, efficient delivery and low output distortion.

The MA5332MS Merus Class D audio amplifier multi-chip module can be ordered now in a PG-IQFN-42 package.
