Intersil adds five synchronous buck regulators to ISL850xx family

Able to support auxiliary rails for industrial and infrastructure point-of-load (PoL) applications up to 14A, five synchronous buck regulators have been added to Intersil’s ISL850xx family.

The five synchronous buck regulators step-down 12V rails to PoL inputs down to 0.6V for MCUs, FPGAs, memory and peripheral I/Os. The ISL85014, ISL85012, ISL85009, ISL85005A and ISL85005 buck regulators deliver 14, 12, 9.0 and 5.0A of continuous output current, respectively. They can be used in industrial computers and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) as well as telecomms, test and measurement, server and storage networking equipment.

The ISL850xx sync buck regulators support input voltage of 3.8 to 18V and a wide output current range, says Intersil. The pin-compatible regulators integrate very low RDS ON high side and low side MOSFETs that reduce external component count and power loss to extend operating life. Both FETs also provide current limit and reverse current limit, claimed to boost reliability and protect the system during an over-current event. The ISL850xx devices enable lower die temperatures, allowing systems to operate without cooling fans or heatsinks. Their internal compensation eliminates additional external components, which reduce design complexity and bill of materials (BoM) cost. 

The ISL85014 is offered in one of the industry’s smallest 14A packages at 3.5 x 3.5mm, for a compact footprint that frees up board space. The ISL85009 is claimed to be one of the industry’s most power-efficient 9.0A sync buck regulators, offering high side FET RDS ON at 17mΩ and low side FET RDS ON of 8.5mΩ to reduce die temperatures for applications without cooling systems. The pin-compatible ISL85014, ISL85012 and ISL85009 address high load current applications; the 5.0A ISL85005A and ISL85005 buck switching regulators are pin-compatible with the previously released 3.0A ISL85003A and ISL85003 devices.

Full protection includes input/output over-voltage, integrated bootstrap diode with under-voltage detection, and selectable over-current protection (OCP) schemes including hiccup and latch-off.

The ISL850xx 12V sync buck regulators are available now in 12-lead DFN and 15-lead TQFN packages.
