ISL94202 multi-cell battery pack monitor from Intersil supports rechargeable packs
Designed to enable ever-smaller Li-Ion battery pack designs, Intersil, a subsidiary of Renesas Electronics, has announced the ISL94202 three-to-eight cell battery pack monitor. It supports Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) and other battery chemistries used in applications such as e-bikes, scooters, energy storage systems, toys, vacuum cleaners, lawn equipment and handheld power tools.
Li-Ion batteries are smaller, weigh less, and deliver longer battery life than other battery chemistries, but require monitoring and protection says Intersil. The integrated ISL94202 battery pack monitor enables small, two-terminal designs, and accurately monitors, protects and cell balances rechargeable battery packs to ensure safe operation and charging, says the company.
The ISL94202 operates as a standalone battery protection system using an internal state machine with five pre-programmed modes for balancing and controlling each battery cell. The battery pack monitor surveys and protects the battery pack from potentially harmful events, such as hardware faults, short circuit conditions, and cell voltage overcharge/over-discharge. The ISL94202 also meets the UL2054, UL2271/72 and IEC62133-specified pack safety requirements. Designers can program the ISL94202 battery monitor’s protection settings to enable the industry’s smallest, low-cost battery packs without requiring an external microcontroller, says Intersil. If required, the ISL94202 can also communicate with an external microcontroller via I²C serial bus to provide additional fuel gauge measurements, including state of charge and state of health information. Precise fuel gauge status is provided by the device’s high-side current measurement feature.
The ISL94202 integrates high-side charge/discharge FET drive circuitry, which, according to the company, makes it easy to interface to tools or electric motor equipment. The battery cell pack monitor also controls external passive cell balancing switches to ensure good cell energy matching while protecting the pack’s cell life from chronic undercharging. In addition, the ISL94202 can withstand factory pack assembly hot plug events, to simplify manufacturing.
The eight cell voltage monitors support Li-ion CoO², Li-ion Mn2O4, and Li-ion FePO4 battery chemistries. According to Intersil, the ISL94202 offers the highest level of integration, with cell voltage level shift, automatic cell balance, 14bit ADC, current sense monitor, power FET control, and temperature sensor interface. The configuration/calibration registers are stored in EEPROM and the battery cell pack monitor operates over the industry temperature range (-40 to +85 degree C).
The ISL94202 battery pack monitor is available now in a 6.0 x 6.0mm, 48-lead QFN package. The ISL94202EVKIT1Z evaluation kit includes an evaluation board, interface board with USB to I²C interface, and software GUI that supports standalone operation or an external microcontroller.
