Junkosha launches metrology grade cable assemblies at IMS 2023

Two coaxial cable assemblies by Junkosha will be showcased at the 2023 International Microwave Symposium (IMS) next week.

The 26.5GHz and 50GHz metrology grade microwave/mmWave vector network analyser (VNA) test cable assemblies for applications including calibration tests.

The cables use Junkosha’s precision engineered-EPTFE tape wrapping technology to deliver phase (within +/- 4.5 degrees at 50GHz) and amplitude (within +/- 0.08dB at 50GHz) stability in flexure. They also exhibit strong phase stability in temperature, added the company.

Both cables are flexible and can maintain this level of performance when bent 180 degrees on a 2.25 inch radius mandrel, with no spring back. The cable assemblies are available in a variety of sized connectors and are durable; 40,000 tick tock cycles is typical, said Junkosha. The ruggedised port side NMD connector is also available to ensure reliable connections to the VNA.

Tony Aaltonen, CEO of Signal Solutions Group, explains: “More and more companies require a choice of mmWave cable assemblies to conduct in-house calibration tests. This has increased the need for solutions that can demonstrate excellent phase stability over time, high durability when bending and overall longevity. The other requirement we are seeing is the need for shorter lead times as demand increases, something not everyone can match.”

Junkosha is constantly innovating precision engineered cabling for 5G but also for specialised applications such as VNA calibration tests, said Masaru Omoto, product manager for Junkosha. Resolving calibration issues quickly and cost-effectively not only reduces bottlenecks in the production cycle, but also increases output, he said.

The cable assemblies are available at lead time of three weeks, which the company says is unrivalled in the industry.

The IEEE MTT International Microwave Symposium (IMS) will be held at the San Diego Convention Center, California, USA (11 to 16 June).

Junkosha pioneers fluoropolymer application technologies across many sectors including microwave interconnect and medical devices. It has three operations in Japan, including its headquarters, and sites in the US, UK and China. The company provides wire and cable products, including microwave interconnects, robot cables, high data rate cables, camera link cable assemblies, ultrafine coaxial cables and assemblies, cables for clean environments, and general wires and cables. It also provides tube and fitting products, including generic resin tubes, fluoropolymer tubes, high-barrier tubes, flexible multi-layered tubes, industrial hoses, degassing modules, heat-shrinkable tubes, and the market leading peelable heat shrink tubes.
