LED drivers for LCD backlights lower power consumption in automotive displays

Medium to large automotive displays can benefit from lower power consumption, said Rohm, using the BD83A04EFV-M, BD83A14EFV-M and BD82A26MUF-M LED driver ICs.

The four- and six-channel LED driver ICs are designed for medium to large size automotive displays in car infotainment and instrument clusters. As ADAS (advanced driver assistance systems) and enhanced car infotainment functionality have evolved, automotive designers have used larger displays which in turn are required to provide high efficiency, improved rated output current with reduced power consumption. In addition, flickering automotive displays can lead to poor visibility and unsafe conditions, warned Rohm.

Rohm has developed the LED drivers for LCD backlights which combine proprietary low power technology with seamless PWM dimming to eliminate flickering when changing display brightness from low to high.

Thes LED drivers leverage proprietary low power consumption technology to reduce losses in LED driver current control circuits. The result is 20 per cent lower overall IC power consumption compared to conventional products under typical conditions (80mA per channel LED circuit current, 12V power supply). This contributes to lower power consumption in medium- to large-sized automotive displays where power consumption is an issue, said Rohm.

All models are equipped with both DC and PWM dimming. As there is no the need to switch current feedback mode for low / high brightness change using the company’s  original seamless PWM dimming technology, reduces flickering during general PWM dimming.

Suitable applications for the LED drivers are instrument clusters, car infotainment systems, head-up displays (HUDs) and electronic mirrors (side / rear view models).

The LED driver ICs are in mass production now and available from online distributors, Digi-Key, Mouser and Farnell.
