Low power microcontroller family extends battery life at fraction of the cost

PIC24 GA7 microcontrollers are the lowest-cost 256kbyte flash memory 16bit microcontrollers available today, says Microchip. They can be used for cost-sensitive areas like IoT sensor nodes, portable medical devices and industrial control applications.

The PIC24 GA7 family offers low-power modes including multiple sleep modes, down to 190nA, to extend battery life in portable applications. They also offer up to 256kbyte flash and 16kbyte RAM and are available in 28, 44 and 48pin package options, with sizes down to 4.0 x 4.0mm.

The microcontrollers also support Core Independent Peripherals (CIPs) such as configurable logic cell, multi-output capture compare pulse width modulation module (MCCP) and direct memory access (DMA). Developers can accomplish tasks in hardware and free the CPU to do other tasks or to sleep. The microcontrollers also feature a robust peripheral set including 12bit, 200ksample/s ADC, up to seven timers and two UARTs.

Variants are 64, 128 and 256kbyte in 28-, 44- and 48pin packaging options.

For evaluation and development, there is the Explorer 16/32 development board ecosystem (DM240001-2) and the PIC24FJ256GA705 plug-in module (MA240039) which plugs into the Explorer 16/32 board. There is also the MPLAB Code Configurator (MCC), MPLAB X IDE and XC16 Compile software development platforms.

Microchip’s MPLAB Xpress Cloud-Based IDE, an online development environment, contains the most popular features of MPLAB X IDE. MPLAB Xpress incorporates the latest version of MPLAB Code Configurator, which enables users to automatically generate initialisation and application C code using a graphical interface and pin map. The MPLAB Xpress IDE is available free of charge.
