Low profile AC/DC power module suits industrial and medical applications

High power density, low profile, on-board AC/DC power modules from Cosel offer a high power density of 152W/In3 or 9/3W/cm3 and are certified to meet industrial and medical standards.

Introduced by Cosel, the TUNS1200 is a compact, 1.2kW AC/DC power module that is designed for worldwide applications. It has an input voltage range of 85 to 305V AC and is certified to meet industrial and medical standards.

It is packaged in a sealed plastic case with aluminium baseplate and has a height of just 12.7mm (0.5 inch) and weighs less than 280g (9.8oz). According to Cosel, the TUNS1200’s footprint is 36 per cent smaller than existing 1kW onboard AC/DC modules, yet it delivers 21 per cent more power. The unit can be operated from -40 to +100 degrees C baseplate temperatures. The TUNS1200 delivers its full power up to +85 degrees C baseplate temperature, and is able to operate safely at up to +100 degrees C with a derating.

TUNS1200 modules can be paralleled up to nine units (up to 9,750W) and the output voltage can be adjusted down to 0V. It can also be set to constant voltage or constant current operating modes. When connected units in parallel and using the current balance (CB) pin, the Cosel active current sharing ensures that each module delivers the correct amount of current to the load.

The TUNS1200 is the latest member of Cosel’s TUNS series, which includes a 50W quarter brick, 100W half brick and 300, 500 and 700W full brick units.

Designed for worldwide applications, TUNS1200 power conform to the safety standards input voltage range of 100 to 277V AC (50/60Hz).

There are three output versions of the TUNS1200: TUNS1200F12 (12V / 84A), TUNS1200F28 (28V / 43A) and the TUNS1200F48 (48V / 25A). Output voltage can be adjusted ± 20 per cent (-20/+10 per cent for the 48V) using the trimming pin. The TUNS1200 series includes an active voltage trimming (VTRM) input to adjust the output voltage down to zero by applying an external voltage source. Power efficiency is 92 per cent typical and power factor is 0.98 at 100V.

For applications such as battery chargers requiring constant current (CC), the TUNS1200 includes a dedicated pin (ITRM). The addition of a DC voltage or connecting a resistor to the –S terminal enables the constant current to be set from just above zero to the desired current.

The units have a 3,000V AC input to output isolation voltage (2MOOP), 2,000V AC input to ground (1MOOP) and 500V AC output to ground. Overcurrent, overvoltage and thermal protection are included as standard.

The TUNS1200 complies with UL62368-1, EN62368-1, C-UL (equivalent to CAN/CSA-C22.2 No.62368-1 ), ANSI/AAMI ES60601-1, EN60601-1 3rd, C-UL (equivalent to CAN/CSA-C22.2 No.60601-1), and complies with IEC60601-1-2 4th. It also has an active filter, complying with the harmonic attenuation IEC61000-3-2 (Class A).
