Micro-displacement sensor has a resolution of 10microns

Capable of resolving just 10microns (one tenth the diameter of a human hair or the thickness of a coat of paint), the Z4D-C01 optical micro-displacement sensor locates target objects optically without the need for contact.

Available from Omron Electronic Components Europe, it can be used for travel detection in industrial automation systems or consumer electronics as well as for paper thickness and multi-feed detection office equipment and ATMs.

Location is determined and movement detected by changes in the location of light reflected from the object. The resolution is based on a proprietary optical design using triangulation. This structure achieves stable linearity between the output voltage and distance, claims the company, simplifying the design of the host circuit. Output is stabilised using a signal divider.

The sensor can detect objects located up to 6.5mm away.
