Oxygen sensor responds in four seconds from 0.1 to 100%
To meet modern oxygen monitoring applications, SST Sensing has developed the Zirconia Miniature series of sensors. The space saving, 12mm diameter metal cans are 5pin devices, with a response time of as little as four seconds and cover an oxygen range from 0.1% to 100%.
They can operate in oxygen pressures from 2mbar to 3bar. Target application areas are combustion control in industrial boilers, ensuring the quality of perishable goods during transportation, controlling industrial composting processes and in both oxygen- generating and inerting aircraft systems.
Using proprietary technology, the zirconium dioxide (ZrO2) -based sensors are able to keep generating exact, reliable data across an extensive operational lifespan, even in the most challenging of environments, claims the company. They are rugged and can cope with high temperatures (up to 400°C), humidity conditions and oxygen pressures. Furthermore, they are not susceptible to depletion over time, thereby reducing the repair and replacement costs involved.
Conventional zirconia oxygen sensors rely on sensing cells that use either an oxygen ion pump or the Nernst Effect. These sensors, however, incorporate both mechanisms in tandem. Operational benefits are claimed to be improved performance and providing the diagnostics to allow any effect on system performance to be promptly identified and addressed. Combining these mechanisms means that there is no need to include a sealed reference gas or temperature stabilisation. The resulting oxygen sensing system takes up considerably less space, claims the company, and makes recalibration very simple to carry out.
