Plessey selects microLED technology for world’s first AR/VR glasses

At CES 2019 (Las Vegas, 8 to 11 January 2019), Plessey will offer visitors to its booth the chance to experience what it believes is the world’s first augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) glasses powered by microLEDs. The Vuzix smart glasses will be demonstrated at CES 2019. Vuzix is the first company to use Plessey’s microLEDs for AR applications.

According to Plessey, using microLED instead of OLED displays deliver 10 times the resolution, 100 times the contrast ratio and up to 1,000 times greater luminance

This performance increase is achieved using just half the power consumption, to double battery life in portable headsets.

Mike Lee, president of Corporate and Business Development at Plessey, said: “We’re looking forward to previewing the amazing new AR, VR and head-up display experience that microLEDs are set to create at CES. Compared with all other display technologies, microLEDs are brighter, smaller, lighter, more energy-efficient, and have a longer operating life.  . . . Plessey is helping its customers to be first to bring the technology to market in 2019.”

Plessey microLEDs are developed using a uniquely scalable and economical, repeatable GaN-on-Silicon monolithic process that guarantees uniform quality. The process eliminates the problems associated with the pick-an-place microLED display manufacturing techniques, says the company.

Plessey provides volume processing of its proprietary GaN-on-silicon for a wide range of optoelectronic devices and systems. Plessey operates 150 and 200mm wafer processing facilities for design, test and assembly of products, and a comprehensive suite of photonic characterisation and applications laboratories.

Plessey supplies illuminators for display engines (DMD and LCOS) and full-field emissive microLED displays that combine very high density RGB pixel arrays with high-performance CMOS backplanes to produce very high-brightness, low-power and high-frame-rate image sources for head-mounted displays (HMDs) and AR and VR systems.
