Power Integrations increases Scale-iDriver IC family to support 1700V IGBTs

A new gate driver IC from Power Integrations targets applications from 400 to 690V AC, including three-level topology inverters.

The Scale-iDriver family of galvanically isolated single-channel gate driver ICs has been expanded to include devices that support insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) blocking voltages up to 1700V, which are generally used in 400 and 690V AC line applications.

They 1700V Scale-iDriver ICs are suitable for the latest three-level topology photovoltaic inverters and for photovoltaic arrays leveraging the new 1500V DC bus standard. The expanded 1700V Scale-iDriver family allows original equipment manufactuers to use the same highly integrated, safe and reliable driver technology across a range of solutions, says Power Integrations.

The 1700V Scale-iDriver ICs are optimised for driving both IGBTs and metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs). They use Power Integrations’  magneto-inductive, bi-directional communications technology (FluxLink) to eliminate the need for opto-electronics, which can be unreliable, and also the associated compensation circuitry. This combination, says Power Integrations, enhances operational stability while reducing system complexity. Power Integrations’ Scale technology incorporates all key gate driver functions into an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), reducing size and improving reliability while simplifying design. The eSOP package features greater than 9.5mm of creepage and a CTI of 600, ensuring substantial operating voltage margin and high system reliability.

The 1700 V Scale-iDriver ICs can be operated from -40 to +125 degree C and at frequencies of up to 75kHz. The ICs meet the upcoming requirements of IEC 60747-17 and VDE 0884-17. They also offer desaturation (short-circuit) protection with advanced soft shut down (ASSD) functionality. 

The ICs deliver a gate current of up to 8.0A and support systems of over 110kW without an external booster, or up to 30A gate current and over 400kW with an external booster. The 1700 V Scale-iDriver ICs suit applications in industrial drives, power supplies/uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), photovoltaic inverters of all sizes, industrial heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) electric vehicle (EV) charging and traction equipment including commercial EVs. SID1183K devices are available now.
