Power Metal Strip battery shunt resistor has consistent contact

Vishay Intertechnology has added the WSBS8518…20 Power Metal Strip battery shunt resistor. It has two sense pins that offer a 36W capacity in the 8518 case size, and offers improved accuracy and consistent contact location, claims Vishay.

The WSB8518…20 has low resistance values down to 50-mico Ohm, to offer increased accuracy and lower costs compared with Hall-effect current sensing solutions, says Vishay. Its sense pins assist in printed circuit board (PCB) mounting and provide consistent contact point location.

The resistor features a proprietary processing technique that produces extremely low resistance values of 50, 100, 125, and 250-micro Ohm. These low values allow for more accurate data to determine battery charge and discharge, which in turn help designers meet specific customer battery management requirements for applications in gas/petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric cars and trucks, as well as electric fork lifts, uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, and other heavy industrial applications.

The WSBS8518…20 features a solid metal manganese-copper alloy resistive element with low temperature co-efficient resistance (TCR) of ±20ppm/ degree C, and a welded terminal to element connection. The resistor offers low inductance values of less than 5nH, low thermal EMF less than one micro V/ degree C, and an operating temperature range of -65 to +170 degree C. The device is RoHS-compliant and halogen-free.

Samples and production quantities of the WSBS8518…20 are available now, with a lead time of 10 to 12 weeks for larger orders.

Vishay Intertechnology manufactures discrete semiconductors (diodes, metal oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs), and infrared optoelectronics and passive electronic components, such as resistors, inductors, and capacitors. Components are used in virtually all types of electronic devices and equipment, in the industrial, computing, automotive, consumer, telecommunications, military, aerospace, power supplies, and medical markets. Vishay also offers a one-stop shop service.
