Recom extends R-78K switching regular input and temperature ranges

The input and temperature ranges for the R-78K series of switching regulators have been extended to 40V and 100 degrees C, respectively.

Recom’s three-terminal R-78 series switching regulators are established as a replacement for lossy ’78 series’ linear types. According to Recom, they deliver dramatic improvements in efficiency eliminating the need for heatsinks, saving cost and precious board space. The company has now extended the range with the addition of the cost-effective R-78CK-0.5 series, operating to 40V input and over a wider ambient temperature range to +100°C. Output current rating is 0.5A and fixed output voltages available are 3.3, 5.0, 12 and 15V.

The efficiency of the R-78CK-0.5 series peaks at 96 per cent, allowing an operation to +100°C ambient with no or minimal derating at the minimum input voltage, said Recom, and depending on the variant. At higher input voltages, the full 0.5A output can be drawn up to a minimum of +65 degrees C ambient, again depending on variant.

Input under-voltage, short-circuit, and thermal protection is provided, and the parts are certified to IEC/EN 62368-1 3rd edition.

The R-78CK-0.5 series also has lower quiescent current, a lower allowable input-output differential voltage for the 3.3V and 5V output parts, and a smaller package size in each dimension compared with the R-78E series. The R-78CK-0.5 retains the standard pinout.

According to Matthew Dauterive, DC/DC product manager of Recom: “The R-78CK-0.5 series now addresses wider applications with its higher input voltage rating and wider operating temperature range”.

The parts include a three-year warranty. Samples and OEM pricing are available from all authorised distributors, or directly from Recom.

Recom Power manufactures a range of standard and customised DC/DC and AC/DC converters in every power class from sub-1W to tens of kW, as well as switching regulators and LED drivers in a selection of formats.

The company headquarters are located in Gmunden, Austria, and include a logistics, research and development centre, and laboratory wing, and is supported by a worldwide distribution network.
