Short version of industrial connector is robust in space constrained applications

For harsh environments where space is limited, binder has introduced a short version of the binder M16 series 423. The shieldable circular connectors with screw locking meet the IP67 acquirements when mated and are suitable for typical, interference-prone industrial environments, advised binder.

The company specialises in producing industrial circular connectors, has launched a short version of the 423 series, the circular connectors in the M16 form factor. They are approximately 47mm in length. The company offers version with two- to 19-pin variants and meet IP67 requirements when mated. 

The short, shieldable cable plugs and sockets each have a cable clamp, in both solder and crimp versions. Depending on the number of pins and connection type, the connectors are designed for wire gauges from 0.14mm2 (AWG 26) to 1.0mm2 (AWG 18). The rated values for voltage and current are specified as 32 to 250V and 3.0 to 7.0A, respectively. Cable outlets are from 4.1 to 7.8mm.

The connectors have been developed for demanding test and measurement and automation tasks. Target applications for the 423-series short version primarily include applications in test and measurement as well as automation technology that are subject to limited installation conditions. In particular, precision instruments that have to deliver accurate measurement results in confined and noisy environments benefit from the compact design of the connectors but electromagnetic shielding is essential to prevent interference signals from adjacent electronic circuitry from impairing the detection or transmission at the measuring device.

binder set out to develop the M16 variants with as many standard parts as possible and rated to IP67. 

Since its first applications in audio technology more than 50 years ago, the M16 form factor has been used in a range of applications where the options for termination, assembly and mounting are valued, primarily for connecting sensors and other field devices in indoor applications.

5G mobile communications is one example of the innovation areas for the M16 connectors, with AISG (Antenna Interface Standards Group) -compliant binder 423-series products used to connect devices in the network operators’ antenna lines. binder is now launching a short version of this product series.

The shieldable short version of the M16 series 423 is available in 10 solder and five-crimp male and female versions, corresponding to the different pin counts. They are all designed for more than 500 mating cycles.

The maximum wire gauges for solder products are rated at 0.75mm2 (AWG 18) for pin counts of two to eight; and 0.25mm2 (AWG 24) for 12- to 19-pin connectors. The rated voltages are 32 or 150V depending on the pin count, the rated impulse voltages 500 or 1,500V, respectively. The rated currents at 40 degrees C range from 3.0 to 7.0A. All solder products are equipped with brass contacts as well as bronze sockets and are specified for a temperature range from -30 to +95 degrees C. Housing and locking are made of nickel-plated brass.

The crimp products in the series are designed for wire gauges of 0.14 to 1.0mm2 or AWG 26 to AWG 18 (four to six pins) and for 0.14 to 0.75mm2 or AWG 26 to AWG 20 (seven to eight pins). The rated voltages are 32 or 150V, the rated impulse voltages are 500 or 1,500V, and the rated currents are 5.0 or 6.0A, respectively. The temperature range for the connectors with crimp termination extends from -40 to +100 degrees C. As with the solder versions, the housing and locking are made of nickel-plated brass.
