Smart Modular increases density with DDR4 MIP

The high-density DDR4 DRAM memory modules available from Smart Modular Technologies now include a 16Gbyte Module in a Package (MIP). It is designed for space-constrained applications to increase memory capacity.

The higher density DDR4 MIP expands the MIP density range to 16Gbyte. The small form factor targets uses in industrial IoT, embedded computing, broadcast video, and mobile routers, where maximum DRAM is required in limited spaces.

The MIP operates up to DDR4-3200 and can replace multiple down-board DRAMs or SO-DIMMs to maximise DRAM density within minimal board space, says Smart.

The MIP offers a simplified system design and reduces main board routing complexity, compared to solder down approaches, as it does not need back-to-back chip placements. According to Smart, the MIP contains all necessary passives and a thermal sensor. It also removes the need for a mating connector, resulting in better signal integrity and reduced flight time.

The MIP is also claimed to offer improved flexibility over die stacking and packaging solutions.

The 16Gbyte MIP is available in two configurations, the standard 1Gx64 version or the two channels of x32 configuration to replace either soldered down DRAMs or SO-DIMMs.  The MIP can be used for microcontroller, CPU, or FPGA-based embedded computing and IIoT systems that require a x64 or x32 memory access.  For example, a small form factor COMe system for IIoT can be populated with 128Gbyte of memory using four 16Gbyte MIPs on the top of the system and four 16Gbyte MIPs mirrored on the bottom.

SMART offers MIPs from four to 16Gbyte with speeds up to DDR4-3200.
