SoM optimises PolarFire for industrial and medical use
Based on Microchip’s PolarFire FPGA, the M100PF is a system on module (SoM) from Aries Embedded. The company will also introduce a complementary evaluation platform M100PFEVP, to support customers for a fast start to a project.
The M100PF board provides the flexibility of the popular FPGAs for demanding applications in industrial and medical technology, says Aries Embedded. Andreas Widder, managing director explains the reason behind the choice of FPGA: “PolarFire captivates with up to 50 per cent lower power consumption than competing FPGAs, at mid-range densities with exceptional safety and reliability,” he says. The SoM also extends the FPGA functionality with RAM, flash and clocking.
For industrial use, the SoM allows an expanded temperature range, from 0 to +70 degrees C up to -40 to +85 degrees C. On the SoM, PolarFire FPGAs provide 100k, 192k, or 300k logic elements (LE) and feature 12.7G transceivers with up to 50 per cent lower power consumption. There is 256Mbit configuration storage, DDR3 RAM (512Mbit, 1.0 or 2.0Gbit), as well as 4.0 to 64Gbit eMMC NAND flash to develop complex designs, adds Aries. Despite measuring just 72 x 40mm, the SoMs also have eight SerDes with 250Mbits to 12.5Gbits per second, two PCI express Gen2 end points/root port slots, I/O, and two Samtec QSH-090-01-F-D-A board-to-board connectors.
The M100PFEVP evaluation platform enables customers to evaluate the PolarFire FPGA, realise prototypes and even use the FPGA in series production. The evaluation board contains 2Gbit Ethernet, USB, and four DSub9 interfaces for CAN, RS232, in addition to Pmod and HSMC extension connectors and a microSD card slot. The M100PFEVP starter kit includes the M100PVEVP baseboard, M100PF-1DB storage extensions, a seven-inch touchscreen, and power supply.
