Three-phase gate driver IC manages and protects, says Infineon

The Motix family has been developed by Infineon Technologies for automotive and industrial motor control applications. The company has expanded the family with a the 6ED2742S01Q. The three-phase, 160V silicon-on-insulator (SOI) gate driver IC features an integrated power management unit.

It is available in a QFN-32 package with a thermally-efficient exposed power pad. According to Infineon, this makes the device easy to integrate for battery-powered industrial BLDC (brushless DC) motor control drives including robotics, drones, light electric vehicles (LEVs) and cordless power tools.

The 6ED2742S01Q has integrated bootstrap diodes that power three external high-side bootstrap capacitors. Through a trickle charge pump, they support 100 per cent duty cycle operation. Protection includes under-voltage lock-out, over-current protection with configurable threshold, fault communication and automatic fault recovery. The output drivers integrate a high pulse current buffer stage designed for minimal driver cross-conduction. The IC also integrates a current sense amplifier (CSA) with selectable gain between the low-side supply voltage (V SS) and the low-side power ground return (COM).

The Motix gate driver provides a 1.0A source and 2.0A sink current with independent under-voltage lock-out (UVLO) for both high-side and low-side gate drives. Propagation delay is 100 nanoseconds and a minimum dead time is 100 nanoseconds with built-in delay matching. As a result, said Infineon, the driver enables high switching frequencies with reduced level shift losses. The exposed pad of the QFN-32 provides very low thermal resistance, enabling reliable operation.

The Motix 6ED2742S01Q is rated for the industrial temperature range, operating from -40 to +125 degrees C. It can easily drive OptiMOS and StrongIRFET MOSFETs in single or parallel combinations, added Infineon and supports battery voltages from 10.8 to 120V.

The Motix 6ED2742S01Q can be ordered now in an industry-standard 5.0 x 5.0mm² QFN-32 package with an exposed pad and a 2kV HBM ESD rating.
