Two buck-boost regulators boast best-in-class conversion efficiency
Two buck-boost regulators have been added to the Cool-Power ZVS regulator portfolio. According to Vicor, the PI3741-0x regulators deliver up to 150W at greater than 97 per cent efficiency, and feature best-in-class conversion efficiency, power density, and performance.
The regulators are designed for demanding, automotive, industrial, test, automation, lighting, battery regulation, and telecomms applications.
Unlike conventional, hard-switching buck-boost regulators, they minimize switching losses and maintain efficiency over the specified input voltage range while enabling high frequency operation for improved power density and fast dynamic response to line and load transients. Operating range is -40 to 125 degree C. The regulators require minimal external components to form a complete high performance regulator, says the company. Both operate over a wide input voltage range of 21 to 60V DC and integrate a ZVS controller, power switches and support circuitry within a high density, thermally adept, 10 x 14 x 2.5mm SiP (system-in-package). The PI3741-00 delivers a user-definable output voltage in the range of 21 to 36V DC; the PI3741-01 supports a higher output voltage of 36 to 54V DC.
Other features are high frequency operation of 1MHz and single wire current sharing for parallel operation. There is also over/under-voltage, over-temperature, and over-current protection. The regulators incorporate a current monitoring amplifier, a user-configurable high bandwidth differential amplifier and bi-directional synchronisation options.
