Vishay Intertechnology shrinks screw terminal aluminium capacitors
Screw terminal aluminium electrolytic capacitors in smaller sizes than earlier generations allow designers to pack more energy storage into less space, said Vishay BCcomponents as it launched its 202 PML-ST series.
Available in 11 case sizes ranging from 35 x 60mm to 90 x 220mm, the 202 PML-ST series offers high capacitance / voltage (CV) values while providing increased ripple current to 49.6A, lower ESR down to 2mOhm and a long useful life of 10,000 hours at +85 degrees C.
The electrolytic capacitors feature a cylindrical aluminium case insulated with a blue sleeve and pressure relief in the sealing disc. They provide high CV combinations from 56,000 microF at 200V to 15,000 microF at 450V. For example, a CV rating of 2200 microF / 400V which was previously available in the 65 x 105mm case size, is now available in the 50 x 105mm case size. For CV ratings with a similar case size to previous-generation capacitors, the 2020 PML-ST series offers improved ripple current and ESR. For example, a CV rating of 4700 microF / 400V offers 12 per cent higher ripple current and 16 per cent lower ESR.
As polarised aluminium electrolytic capacitors with a non-solid electrolyte, the RoHS-compliant devices are suitable for filtering, buffering and energy storage in pulsed power applications with a required lifetime of 10 to 15 years.
Typical applications include industrial motor drives, rail traction for trains and underground / subway / metro trains, welding equipment, HVAC and UPS. They are also suitable for wind turbines and solar power inverters and medical X-ray equipment.
Samples are available from catalogue houses in small quantities. Production quantities of the 202 PML-ST series capacitors are available now, with lead times of 18 to 20 weeks.
