2Mpixel CMOS image sensor is for disposable endoscope designs
Featuring a CameraCubeChip package with AntLinx digital interface, the OH02B image sensor is the first miniature 2Mpixel CMOS image sensor in a square format for disposable and reuseable endoscopes, said Omnivision.
The 1500 x 1500 resolution CMOS image sensor is suitable for gastrointestinal, ENT (ear, nose and throat), orthopedic, surgical, dental, and veterinarian reusable and disposable endoscopes, catheters, and guide wires. It is available in what is claimed to be the smallest form factor, a 2.5 x 2.5mm CameraCubeChip package (OCH2B) for disposable designs. The sensor uses Omnivision’s proprietary technology, which provides the thinnest four meter interface connection directly from the endoscope camera to the camera control unit (CCU) tower, said the company.
The medical industry is moving to single-use endoscopes to minimise cross-contamination and improve patient safety, explained Richard Yand, senior marketing manager, Omnivision. CCD-based image sensors cannot meet today’s high-performance endoscope requirements and are being phased out. “CMOS image sensors, such as the OH02B, are critical for the disposable endoscope market because they enable high resolution and small size, generate very low heat at the tip of the scope design, and are cost-effective for one-time use,” he said. “Omnivision’s CameraCubeChip design provides further size advantages and simplifies design resources and the supply chain,” he said.
Omnivision’s AntLinx digital interface connects the OH02B / OCH2B from the endoscope camera to the CCU tower. It has only four thin micro-coaxial cables that reach four meters in length. It is not affected by noise or EMI and has minimal electromagnetic conduction, confirmed Omnivision. According to the company, AntLinx delivers superior video quality and reduces interface conversion requirements, even for long-reach applications like gastrointestinal endoscopy.
The OH02B image sensor is built on Omnivision’s latest PureCel Plus-S stacked-die technology.
Omnivision is ISO13485-certified. The OCH2B is bio-compatible and waterproof, and the OH02B is autoclavable. It does not require tuning or calibration.
Samples of the OH02B imager and OCH2B camera are available now.
