40W ultra-compact DC-DC converters from XP for demanding space-constrained applications

XP Power has announced the launch of the BCT40T series of cost effective 40W DC-DC converters, housed in an industry-leading 1” x 1” (25.4mm x 25.4mm) compact package designed for PCB mounting. This new series offers high power density and a comprehensive set of features, making it an ideal power solution for a wide range of demanding industrial technology, ITE, and communications applications where space is a critical constraint.

The high performance BCT40T series is specifically engineered for design engineers working in sectors such as test & measurement, robotics, process control, analytical instruments, and communications equipment. Its ultra-compact metal package is a significant advantage, saving valuable PCB area and allowing more room for customer application circuitry. This smaller footprint sets it apart from many 40W alternatives, which typically come in larger 2” x 1” (50.8mm x 24.4mm) packages, resulting in the BCT40T reducing required board space by 50%.

The series features a wide 4:1 input voltage range, ensuring operation across multiple input voltages. Models are available with nominal 24VDC inputs (ranging from 9.0V to 36.0VDC) and 48VDC inputs (ranging from 18.0V to 75.0VDC). The BCT40T offers single regulated outputs ranging from 3.3V to 24VDC, as well as dual regulated outputs at ±12VDC and ±15VDC. Furthermore, the single-output models offer the flexibility of ±10% output voltage adjustment via an external trim resistor, enabling specific voltage requirements and optimised system performance.

It is designed for wide operating temperatures, ranging from -40°C to +105°C. For enhanced system control and safety, the series features remote on/off functionality, enabling energy savings and safe shutdowns.

Robust protection features are integral to the BCT40T series, including 2kVDC isolation between input and output, continuous short-circuit protection with auto-recovery, and overload protection typically set between 130% and 180%. It also incorporates overtemperature protection (at 115°C case temperature), under-voltage lockout (UVLO), and overvoltage protection via a Zener diode clamp.

The series holds worldwide safety approvals, meeting IEC/UL/EN62368-1 standards, as well as applicable CE and UKCA directives. It also complies with EN55032 Class A/B for conducted and radiated emissions, and EN61000-4-x for immunity.
