Thermoelectric assembly increases cooling performance for medical use

Designed for refrigeration applications in medical diagnostics and analytical instrumentation, Laird’s SuperCool thermoelectric assembly (TEA) Series delivers high heat pumping capacity in a small form factor.

The TEA series is designed for indoor lab environments and offers a higher cooling performance per unit volume than competing systems, claims Laird. The SuperCool Series TEA features a hot side air heat sink design that dissipates heat more efficiently than competing heat exchanger technologies, continues the company. Using optimised thermoelectric modules (TEMs) with a high performance heat sink and fan shroud assembly, the SuperCool TEAs transfers heat to air rapidly. The SuperCool Series is designed for precise temperature control in compact analytical storage compartments and medical diagnostic chambers where space is a premium, explains Laird.

There are three models to provide engineers with heat transfer mechanism options on the control side. Heat can be absorbed via liquid, conduction or convection. The liquid to air unit has a cooling capacity of 202W, while the direct to air has 193W and the air to air model has 166W. Custom configurations are available upon request.

“The SuperCool Series enhances the cooling performance by up to 60 per cent in same form factor versus conventional thermoelectric assemblies,” said Anders Kottenauer, senior vice president of Laird’s Thermal Systems business. They are designed to meet customer demand in the medical and analytical markets as engineers are demanding more stringent thermal requirements with less available space.

Laird Thermal Systems offers a vertically integrated thermal management product range coupled with the ability to qualify, manufacture and service globally.

Laird focuses on providing systems, components and solutions that protect electronics from electromagnetic interference (EMI) and heat, and that enable connectivity in mission critical systems through wireless applications and antenna systems.

Products are supplied to all sectors of the electronics industry including transport, industry, medical, telecomms/ computing, and mobile device markets.
