Field-oriented control BLDC motor controllers are customer code-free

There is no need for users to write software to ensure the smooth, quiet motion of   brushless DC (BLDC) electric motor controllers, says Allegro MicroSystems Europe at the launch of its QuietMotion family of code-free FOC sensorless BLDC fan drivers

The QuietMotion family consists of what is believed to be the first to market FOC BLDC motor controllers that are customer code-free for reliable and efficient low audible noise performance while reducing design cycle time.

Most FOC BLDC drivers require software developers to code the algorithm in a microprocessor. QuietMotion devices however integrate Allegro’s FOC algorithms for smooth, quiet motion, eliminating the need to write software. This significantly lowers R&D expenses and reduces time to market, explains Allegro. With only five external components, these devices also minimise bill of materials cost, improve reliability and reduce design complexity.

Flexible user interface and development boards allow customers to tune and evaluate various motors effortlessly, adds the company.

The first member of Allegro’s QuietMotion family is the AMT49406, which is suitable for applications that demand high efficiency and low acoustic noise, such as pole and ceiling fans, humidifiers, dehumidifiers, air purifiers and exhaust fans. The embedded proprietary windowless sinusoidal algorithm and soft-on-soft-start algorithms allow the AMT49406 to provide reliable, industry-leading audible noise performance, claims Allegro.

The A89301 is also a member of the QuietMotion family. It offers quiet operation, as well as additional flexibility and programmable features for premium appliances, such as high end appliance fans, ceiling fans and air purifiers. It is specifically targeted at systems with low speed requirements.

The AMT49406 and the A89301 have a 5.5 to 50V input rating with an operating range of -40 to +105 degrees C. They are available in a 24-contact 4.0 x 4.0mm QFN with exposed thermal pad (suffix ES), and a 24-lead TSSOP with exposed thermal pad (suffix LP). The packages are lead (Pb) -free, with 100 per cent matt-tin leadframe plating.
