Partnership reduces size and weight of three-phase AC power converters
GaN Systems and Aveox have partnered to introduce AC power conversion modules with active power factor correction (APFC).
GaN Systems will supply the APFC for Aveox’s mission critical electro-mechanical, aerospace-compliant power conversion modules for a cockpit, galley and cabin equipment that uses three-phase power.
Aveox supplies high-efficiency power conversion modules for aerospace and defence systems to replace transformer rectifier units. GaN Systems’ power devices allow these modules to be more than five times smaller than conventional units using silicon technology. GaN switches have very low losses which enable an efficiency of above 97 per cent, which reduces the amount of heat generated.
Aveox used compact GaNpx bottom-cooled devices and combined both the semiconductor switches and surface-mounted magnetics onto a single insulated metal substrate (IMS) board.
The resulting three-phase APFC modules are not only smaller than any other available for defence and aerospace applications, but is claimed to have the industry’s highest power density of 10kW/kg.
