High energy double-sided chip resistor has ‘design advantage’

High energy, double-sided chip (HDSC) resistors from TT Electronics offer maximum surge performance in a compact space. The improved surge voltage and pulse power creates design advantage in industrial and medical applications, adds the company.

The HDSC resistors are the latest addition to TT Electronics’ range of pulse withstanding chip resistors. HDSC chip resistors are untrimmed for improved pulse performance, explains the company, making them the only double sided untrimmed chip resistors on the market. They are suitable for use in industrial and medical applications such as power supplies, circuit breakers, and medical monitor input protection.

The surge voltage and pulse power characteristics offer circuit designers the advantage of enhanced surge protection in a compact surface mount design. According to Stephen Oxley, senior resistors engineer, applications and marketing at TT Electronics: “HDSC’s improved surge tolerance also enhances reliability and reduces field failures in applications exposed to electrical surges, critical factors in connected health and non-stop Industry 4.0 applications.”

HDSC resistors are suitable replacements of large chip or multiple chip solutions used to achieve pulse withstanding. Designers can reduce size and weight whilst increasing surge protection for EMC regulatory compliance and product reliability. The resistors’ small footprint for given ratings saves PCB area; an additional advantage for designers of compact SMD circuits in power conversion, motion control and protection applications.

TT’s HDSC resistors are available in four sizes from 0805 to 2512 and withstand up to 6.5kV peak for a 1.2/50 micro seconds surge and up to 6kW for a 0.1ms pulse.

The HDSC resistors are designed for protection and discharge applications in compact power supplies and power control circuits where a resistance tolerance of five per cent is suitable, confirms the company.

TT Electronics provides engineered electronics for performance critical applications.  It has nearly 5,000 staff members operating from 29 key locations around the world. TT designs and manufactures a range of electronics for sensing, power management and connectivity for applications in the industrial, medical, aerospace and defence and transportation sectors.
