Reference design promotes GaN in consumer devices

A 300W adapter reference design from GaN Systems and ON Semiconductor demonstrates the efficiency of GaN in high power density adapter applications for televisions, gaming notebooks and consoles, and industrial and medical devices.

It is claimed to be the highest power density 300W AC adapter reference design available today. It uses GaN Systems’ 650V, 15A GaN E-HEMTs and the NCP51820, NCP13992, NCP1616 and NCP4306 controller and driver ICs from ON Semiconductor.

The system reference design and application note provide detailed technical information including schematic, PCB layout, bill of materials (BoM) files and EMI and efficiency data. The kit hardware has complete PFC, LLC and secondary stages and features a high-efficiency synchronous PFC which meets CoC T2 benchmark. There is also a versatile, low-cost two-layer design and universal input with 19V output at 340W peak. GaN Systems says that system designers using this reference design can reach power densities up to 32W per cubic inch.

Explaining the collaboration, Ryan Zahn, director of marketing at ON Semiconductor, said: “Fast-switching GaN works effectively with our advanced controller and drivers to optimize system designs for high power density, removing design barriers and enabling designers to take advantage of the numerous benefits provided by GaN E-HEMTs.”

According to Charles Bailley, senior director, worldwide business development at GaN Systems: “This reference design, developed in collaboration with ON Semiconductor, makes it easier and more cost effective to design as GaN gains popularity as a building block in the adapter market.” He added that this will be the first of several systems and integrated packaging innovations in development, “which will significantly expand the GaN ecosystem”.

GaN Systems claims to have the largest portfolio of transistors to address the needs of today’s most demanding industries including data centre servers, renewable energy systems, automotive, industrial motors and consumer electronics.

ON Semiconductor is driving energy-efficient innovation with a portfolio of energy- efficient power management, analogue, sensors, logic, timing, connectivity, discrete, SoC and custom devices for automotive, communications, computing, consumer, industrial, medical, aerospace and defence applications.
