Transformer is EMI-optimised to shrink power form factor

Engineers can shrink the power solution by as much as 80 per cent, using the UCC12050, says Texas Instruments. The 500mW high efficiency, isolated DC/DC converter is claimed to have the industry’s lowest electromagnetic interference (EMI).

The UCC12050 is 2.65mm high which enables designers to reduce a solution volume by as much as 80 per cent compared to discrete solutions, and 60 per cent compared to power modules, says Texas Instruments. This represents twice the efficiency of competing devices, says the company.

The UCC12050 has 5kV rms reinforced isolation and 1.2kV rms working voltage to protect against high-voltage spikes in systems such as industrial transport, grid infrastructure and medical equipment.

Based on TI’s integrated transformer technology, the single-package, surface-mount architecture gives designers an easy-to-use, low-profile IC that reduces the bill of materials (BoM), says TI. It also efficiently operates across a wide temperature range of -40 to +125 degrees C.

The UCC12050 is available in a 16-pin small-outline integrated circuit (SOIC) package measuring 10.3 x 10.3 x 2.65mm.

The integrated transformer has low primary-to-secondary capacitance and a quiet control scheme makes it easier for engineers to have their designs pass CISPR 32 Class B EMI tests, with margin, on a two-layer PCB, reports TI. It also eliminates external filter components such as low-dropout regulators and ferrite beads normally required to meet EMI certification, which significantly reduces component selection and design time, says TI.

The company also offers the UCC12040, which provides all of the same benefits with 3kV rms basic isolation.

The UCC12050 and UCC12040 are available in volume production from TI and authorised distributors in a 16-pin, 10.3 x 10.3 x 2.65mm SOIC package.
