Heat-resistant connector is low profile for automotive use

For automotive applications, Hirose Electric has introduced the HVH-280 series of power connectors. The low profile connectors have a three-point high pressure female contact design that enables a current capacity of 30A. It is available in two versions, a waterproof or non-waterproof model.

The series is designed with heat-resistant materials to withstand severe temperature environments. The non-waterproof version can withstand temperature ranges up to 125 degrees C and the waterproof version has a limit of 120 degrees C, suitable for automotive environments.

The HVH-280 is also characterised by features which ensure reliable insertion of the contact and strong vibration resistance. The non-waterproof version is equipped with a retainer which ensures that the contacts are correctly assembled into the connector housing. The waterproof version comes with a connector position assurance (CPA) which makes accidental unmating of the connector impossible, says Hirose. Only by intentional activating of this CPA with a tool like a screwdriver, will the main locking mechanism be operational again.

There are three contact positions on the waterproof connector and two power, two signal contact positions on the waterproof version. The waterproof connector has a pitch of 9.5mm and the non-waterproof version’s pitch is 6.5mm.

Both versions are rated 30A, AC/DC 600V and with a mating cycle of 30 operations. The waterproof version has finger protection to JIS C 0920.

Target applications are converters, inverters, positive temperature co-efficient (PTC) heaters, on-board charger, distribution boards and robot controller units.

Hirose Electric is a Japanese manufacturer, established in 1937. It manufactures connectors for the industrial, automotive, consumer, testing, broadcasting and telecommunications markets.

Its European offices were established over 30 years ago and merged in 2010 to form Hirose Europe BV. The European headquarters is based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Other European branches are located in Germany, UK, France and Italy.
