Digital temperature sensors carry ISO 17025 for pharmaceutical logistics

Data logger manufacturers can eliminate costly and technically challenging calibration operations by integrating the STS32 into loggers, advises Sensiron.

Targeting the pharmaceutical logistics industry, which is quite a strongly regulated, the STS32 has a three-point temperature calibration certificate. This is required when medical or pharmaceutical products are being shipped, for minute temperature monitoring to guarantee product and patient safety.

Analogue temperature sensors require the whole measurement chain to be calibrated, which limits calibration scalability and cost optimisation, explains Sensiron. Digital sensors, however, incorporate the complete measurement chain on a chip to allow pre-calibrated temperature sensors to be used in data loggers and eliminate the need for the manufacturer to perform additional calibration procedures.

The STS32 is a digital, I2C-based temperature sensor with a GDP-adapted accuracy specification and three-point calibration certificate provided by Sensirion’s ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited calibration laboratory. The calibration setpoints are T = -30 degrees C, 5.0 degrees C, and 70 degrees C. All the values are provided in a machine-readable CSV file format and can be associated with the sensor via its unique, unalterable serial number. The metrological traceability of the calibration conforms to Chapter 6.5 of ISO/IEC 17025:2017, commonly referred to in relation to NIST traceability or traceability to other national metrology institutes, in accordance with the CIPM Mutual Recognition Arrangement (CIPM MRA).

Calibration certificates and data for each STS32 sensor can be downloaded from a server address, for processing by automated systems. The calibration data provided by the sensor can be merged with that needed for loggers. In other words, a digital, pre-calibrated temperature sensor can cover the entire calibration process and meet the stringent quality requirements of the pharmaceutical and medical industries, says Sensiron.

The STS32 will be available from October 2020.

Headquartered in Stäfa, Switzerland, Sensirion manufactures digital microsensors and systems. Its product range includes gas and liquid flow sensors, differential pressure sensors and environmental sensors for the measurement of humidity and temperature, volatile organic compounds (VOC), carbon dioxide (CO2) and particulate matter (PM2.5).

It has an international network with sales offices in the USA, Europe, China, Taiwan, Japan and Korea, supplying international customers with standard and custom sensor system solutions for a wide range of applications. Sensirion sensors are commonly used in the medical, industrial and automotive sectors, and in analytical instruments, consumer goods and HVAC products.

Sensiron’s patented CMOSens technology allows for intelligent system integration of the sensor element, logic, calibration data and digital interface on a single chip.
