Integrated DC/DC converter design reduces footprint and height

A multi-patented design is used in the UltraBK family of compact, low profile, integrated DC/DC converters. The devices from Murata are aimed at space-constrained applications such as IT and network infrastructure equipment.

The two-stage design combines a switched capacitor charge pump, and, compared to conventional designs, a smaller buck or boost converter with lower voltage power MOSFETs and reduced output inductance, says Murata. The capacitor network provides almost lossless conversion of the input voltage at any ratio, enabling overall operating efficiency up to 90.5 per cent. The output inductor is approximately 10 times smaller than for a comparable conventional circuit, says Murata. The entire converter fits into a 10.5 x 9.0 mm LGA package which is only 2.1 mm high. Another feature is that EMI is typically 20dB lower.

“Conventional power converters can occupy 30 to 50 per cent of circuit board real estate and typically require large, tall inductors that pose layout challenges and can interfere with cooling airflow,” said Shuji Mikami, Power Modules division, low power products at Murata. The UltraBK family simplifies board design and thermal management while also raising power density for energy efficient, transient performance and low noise emission, he added.

Initial members of the UltraBK family are four buck converters with a choice of 4.0 and 6.0A output ratings and the option of a built-in I2C port for digital configuration and control.

The converters have a wide input voltage range of 6.0 to 14.4V, with programmable output voltage from 0.7 to 1.8V.

  The 4.0A MYTNA1R84RELA2RA and 6.0A MYTNA1R86RELA2RA, and MYTNC1R84RELA2RA and MYTNC1R86RELA2RA with I2C control, are now available from Murata’s distributors.

Murata is a manufacturer of electronic components, modules and devices. The range includes ceramic capacitors, resistors/thermistors, inductors/chokes, timing devices, buzzers, sensors and EMI suppression filters. The ceramic capacitor manufacturer is also a producer of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi modules, board-mount DC/DC converters and manufactures standard and custom AC/DC power supplies.
