Green Hills Software implements u-visor on RH850/U2A

Safe and secure virtualisation has been implemented for embedded microcontrollers as Green Hills Software implement u-visor on Renesas’ RH850/U2A microcontroller. The safe and secure embedded virtualisation hypervisor and embedded microcontroller are designed to support the emerging automotive cybersecurity requirements of ISO/SAE 21434 and UNECE WP.29 and to meet ISO 26262 ASIL D functional safety requirements.

u-visor safely and securely consolidates multiple microcontroller-based systems onto a single multi-core RH850/U2A design, says Green Hills. This enables savings in cost, size, and power, while simplifying the safety design of the system. The hardware-based assisted virtualisation capabilities of the RH850/U2A, allow multiple virtual machines to run simultaneously, supporting a variety of scheduling and core management strategies to meet various automotive uses cases and to ensure extremely low overhead, says the company. The Green Hills Multi integrated development environment (IDE) and related ISO 26262 ASIL D-certified tools provide developers with visibility into system performance and runtime behaviour, allowing them to rapidly integrate and optimise multiple workloads onto a single RH850/U2A. u-visor can host various operating systems, including AutoSAR environments from third party vendors, Green Hills’ u-velOSity, customer in-house OS and micro-executive designs. Customers can choose how to design consolidation for an automotive controller use cases, including support for ECU safety islands.

The RH850/U2A is believed to be the world’s first microcontroller with embedded flash that integrates a hardware-based virtualisation-assisted function with fast, real-time performance. The hardware virtualisation function supports ISO 26262 ASIL D functional safety. To support ASIL D, the hardware-based virtualisation technology allows customers to implement multiple software services with different functional safety levels on the RH850/U2A that can run concurrently without interference while maintaining the hard real-time deterministic performance required to control modern and future vehicle functions.

u-visor for the Renesas RH850/U2A MCU is available today.

Founded in 1982, Green Hills Software specialises in embedded safety and security. In 2008, the Green Hills Integrity-178 RTOS was the first and only operating system to be certified by NIAP (National Information Assurance Partnership) to EAL 6+, High Robustness. The company’s open architecture integrated development solutions address deeply embedded, absolute security and high-reliability applications for the military/avionics, medical, industrial, automotive, networking, consumer and other markets that demand industry-certified solutions.

Green Hills Software is headquartered in Santa Barbara, California, USA, with European headquarters in the United Kingdom.
