Cylindrical hybrid supercapacitors by Eaton raise energy density

Up to eight times higher energy density that conventional electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs), is achieved with the HS/ HSL hybrid supercapacitors from Eaton. The also provide a power density that is up to three times that of lithium-ion batteries. They are supplied in a 3.8V hybrid cell and are available now from Rutronik UK.

Hybrid supercapacitors store energy but combine the advantages of EDLCs and lithium-ion technology to achieve higher energy densities and longer life, explains Rutronik UK. In hybrid supercapacitors, a lithium-doped carbon electrode replaces one of the carbon-based electrodes. With more than 250,000 charging cycles at 20°C ambient temperature and a maintenance-free service life of up to 20 years, the hybrids have many advantages over conventional batteries.

The HSL hybrid supercapacitors is optimised to operate at temperatures down to -25 degrees C and the HS model is optimised for high temperatures, up to +85 degrees C.

The supercapacitors have a low self-discharge. They can operate as standalone energy storage devices or be used in addition to battery systems to optimise system costs, service life and runtimes. They are suitable for emergency power supplies in server rooms or in medical environments, IoT energy storage, smart metering, commercial vehicle/container tracking as well as for impulse and hybrid power supply systems.

Rutronik Elektronische Bauelemente has over 80 local offices around the globe. Founded in 1973 by Helmut Rudel in Ispringen, Germany, the company employs more than 1,900 people worldwide.

The broadline distributor supplies semiconductors, passive and electromechanical components as well as boards, storage, displays and wireless products. The company‘s primary target markets are the automotive, medical, industrial, home appliance, energy and lighting industries.
