Integrated InnoSwitch3-PD reduces adapter/charger component count

Offering an integrated charger solution to reduce the component count in adapters and chargers, the InnoSwitch 3-PD extends Power Integrations’ range of ICs for power conversion.

The family of ICs is for USB Type-C, USB PD (power delivery) and USB programmable power supply (PPS) adapters. The ICs include a USB-C and PD controller, a high-voltage PowiGaN switch, a multi-mode quasi-resonant flyback controller, secondary-side sensing, FluxLink isolated digital feedback and a synchronous-rectification driver integrated into a compact InSOP-24D-package.

Aditya Kulkarni, senior product marketing engineer at Power Integrations explains: “InnoSwitch3-PD ICs target designers seeking the ultimate in charger power density. This requires the highest level of integration and maximum efficiency to limit self-heating. . . . the InnoSwitch3 family dramatically simplifies the development and manufacturing of compact, energy-efficient USB PD power supplies for smartphones, tablets, notebooks, and other devices that benefit from fast charging,” he says. The InnoSwitch3-PD ICs reduce the bill of materials count to half that of conventional designs, adds Kulkarni, and is also claimed to reduce design time and simplify high-volume manufacture for slim, compact chargers.

The ICs have no-load power consumption as low as 14 mW, enabling them to be used in power supply designs which meet all global energy-efficiency regulations. The efficiency ensures low heat dissipation, thus eliminating the need for bulky heatsinks. In addition, FluxLink high speed communications feedback link ensures fast, accurate secondary-side regulation, says Power Integrations. InnoSwitch3-PD ICs are also protected with input voltage monitoring, accurate brown-in / brown-out and over-voltage protection, together with output over- and under-voltage fault detection with independently configurable fault responses.

The InnoSwitch3-PD ICs are available now from Power Integrations and authorised distributors, Digi-Key, Farnell, Mouser and RS Components.

Power Integrations specialises in semiconductor technologies for high-voltage power conversion. The company says its products are key building blocks in the clean power ecosystem, enabling the generation of renewable energy as well as the efficient transmission and consumption of power in applications ranging from mW to MW.
