16bit microcontrollers with ADC suit measuring instruments

Samples of the 1C17M02 and S1C17M03 energy-efficient, 16-bit microcontrollers equipped with a precision ADC, are shipping now. The Epson devices can be used in digital multimeters and other display-equipped measuring instruments, advised Seiko Epson.

They are built around Epson’s ow-power technology and have a high resolution 16-bit delta sigma ADC, dedicated circuit for various measurement modes and LCD drivers. This makes them suitable as a single-chip microcontroller for controlling digital multimeters and other display-equipped measuring instruments.

The need to automate factories has raised the level of importance for the maintenance and inspection of equipment to ensure safe use. This in turn has led to a growth in demand for digital multimeters and other measuring instruments.

The S1C17M02 and S1C17M03 were developed for measurement and are equipped with the functions necessary for a digital multimeter. The dedicated circuitry that switches among voltage, current, resistance, capacitance, continuity, diode, and frequency measurement modes. Optimum measurement conditions can be set via  programmable oversampling and a square root circuit for finding the true RMS (root-mean-square) value can reduce the software processing load. A peak hold function supports holding the maximum and minimum measurement values.

The microcontrollers also have a built-in peripheral circuit for an LCD driver, flash memory and EEPROM that can store calibration data and measurement data. This can reduce the number of external parts needed. Epson also pointed out that by offering a product lineup with functional compatibility, customers can reduce software development time when expanding product models.

Other features include a supply voltage detector (SVD) circuit that does not require an external power supply supervisor, a universal port multiplexer (UPMUX), I/O pin assignments that are changed with software, an automatic buzzer output function linked with continuity check mode and low current consumption for longer battery life.
