Kioxia Europe unveils 3bit per cell TLC flash memory

The fifth generation of industrial-grade flash memory devices in Kioxia Europe’s BiCS Flash 3D flash memory with 3bit per cell (triple level cell or TLC) technology, is available in a 132-BGA package.

Densities range from 512Gbits (64Gbytes) to 4Tbits (512Gbytes) to support telecommunications, networking and embedded computing in industrial applications.

Unlike solid state drives (SSDs) designed to be housed in climate-controlled data centres, industrial applications present the need for extended temperature ranges and the ability to maintain high reliability and performance in rugged operating conditions. These latest devices support a wide temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees C.

The devices can convert TLC flash memory to single level cell (1bit per cell) mode which improves performance and reliability, said the company.

Product density is identified based on the density of memory chip(s) within the product, not the amount of memory capacity available for data storage by the end user. Consumer-usable capacity will be less due to overhead data areas, formatting, bad blocks, and other constraints, and may also vary based on the host device and application.

Kioxia Europe (formerly Toshiba Memory Europe) is the European-based subsidiary of Kioxia, supplier of flash memory and SSDs. The company’s 3D flash memory technology, BiCS Flash, is used for storage in high density applications, including advanced smartphones, PCs, SSDs, automotive and data centres.
