Intel releases “most powerful” desktop workstation processor
Two desktop workstation processor families from Intel include the company’s most power desktop workstation processor ever designed, the Xeon w9-3495X. The Xeon W-3400 and Xeon W-2400 desktop workstation processor families are designed for professional creators.
The Xeon w9-3495X is Intel’s most powerful desktop workstation processor to date. The processors (code named Sapphire Rapids) have a new compute architecture, fast cores and new embedded multi-die interconnect bridge (EMIB) packaging to deliver performance sufficient for media and entertainment, engineering and data science professionals. They are, said Roger Chandler, Intel vice president and general manager, Creator and Workstation Solutions , Client Computing Group, “built to tackle both today’s most demanding workloads as well as the professional workloads of the future.”
The Xeon W-3400 and Xeon W-2400 processors support DDR5 RDIMM, PCIe Gen 5.0 and Wi-Fi 6E for the compute workloads of the future. Support for Intel vPro enterprise technology, together with ECC memory and reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) technologies, are engineering to maximise workstation uptime.
The flagship processor, the Xeon W9-3495X has 56 cores in a single socket and a redesigned memory controller and larger L3 cache, delivering up to 28 per cent single-thread and up to 120 per cent multi-thread performance improvements over the previous generation, reported Intel. Operational frequencies are up to 4.8GHz with Intel Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0.
The Xeon W-3400 and Xeon W-2400 processors have up to 105Mbytes of L3 cache for increased performance and data management. There are also eight channels of DDR5 RDIMM support to enable up to 4Tbytes of memory capacity and increased memory bandwidth for large data sets and memory-intensive workloads.
There are up to 112 CPU PCIe Gen 5.0 lanes on Xeon W-3400 processors and up to 64 CPU PCIe Gen 5.0 lanes on Xeon W-2400 processors for multi-GPUs, SSDs and network cards.
Believed to be an industry first, overclocking support for unlocked processors includes DDR5 XMP 3.0 RDIMM memory overclocking features.
Other features are a third generation Intel Deep Learning Boost (AMX, Bfloat16) which delivers “significantly more efficient deep learning acceleration” for artificial intelligence training and inferencing, said Intel.
There are also Intel vPro enterprise technologies for hardware-enhanced security features, firmware version control and remote manageability enable easy system deployment into the enterprise environment.
The Xeon W-3400 and W-2400 workstation processors are available for pre-order now with system availability beginning in March.
