Triple LLC handles up to 11kW for on-board charging

The BCBM-11KW-004 is a trip 3.6kW LCC, suitable for a 400V input, designed by Premo to deliver up to 11kW. The LLC combines a transformer and resonance inductor and is specifically designed for on-board chargers.

On-board chargers are typically integrated into a vehicle’s powertrain and require transformers to convert the AC power from external charging stations or home charging units, into the DC power needed to charge the vehicle’s battery.

The BCBM-11KW-004 LLC has been designed to minimise energy losses during the charging process, which helps to reduce the overall energy consumption of the charging system. For electric vehicle, this reduction can be particularly important as efficient use of energy can help to maximise the vehicle’s range and minimise charging times.

The design offers a 14:15 turn ratio and main inductance value of 115 microH. It provides a switching frequency of 98 to 150kHz and output voltage of 240 to 460V / less than 14.7A rms.

The BCBM family includes 4kW, 7kW, 11kW and 22kW models and can be customised according to customer requirements.

The LCC is compact, with dimensions of 1580 x 980 x 380mm. It is also lightweight at 1.5kg. Combined with its reduced volume, the LCC is suitable for use in electric vehicles’ on board chargers where space is at a premium. It is has also been designed to be durable and able to withstand the rigours of daily use in demanding environments.

Premo used Coolmag, a thermal conductive encapsulation material, to improve the performance capability. Encapsulation is during manufacture to guarantee no bubbles or voids inside the part, said Premo, removing the chances of thermal runaways or failures.

The company has developed an automatic manufacturing process for this part design. Production in a plant in Vietnam and a plant in Morocco is fully automated using cobots from Premo Robotics.

The LCC will be presented at PCIM Europe 2023 at the Premo stand in Hall 6-232.
