Optical time domain reflectometer evaluates submarine cables

Able to evaluate up to 20,000km submarine cables, the Coherent OTDR MW90010B is able to locate faults with an extended measurement distance and wavelength range to improve the test environment for installation and maintenance.

Anritsu’s MW90010B It helps customers to improve the quality of submarine cable communications and continues to support test solutions to meet market needs.

It has an easily selectable wavelength that covers the full C-band and is more portable with a 40 per cent weight reduction for the same product size as the previous model.

The volume of communications traffic is increasing due to the spread of 5G mobile and cloud services and with that, the worldwide submarine cable network, which carries most data communications, is expected to expand with future technological innovations, said Anritsu.

Major IT vendors are increasingly installing landing stations and cables to directly synchronise data centres at high speed and low latency. Submarine cable networks have therefore become more complex, raising the profile of quality assurance for their installation and maintenance.

The Coherent OTDR MW90010B uses the coherent (optical heterodyne) detection method and has a built-in tunable wavelength light source. Its selectable wavelength feature facilitates the measurement of all cable lines from each landing station and helps assure the quality of submarine cables.

It can locate faults in submarine cables up to 20,000km and support faulty detection up to 12,000km with repeaters installed at 80km or more intervals.

It has a wide wavelength range of 1527.60 to 1567.13nm, ITU-T grid 50GHz step and has a built-in tunable light source with ±0.05nm wavelength accuracy.

It weighs less than 10kg for portability at landing stations, submarine cable laying vessels and other maintenance sites.

Anritsu has provided communications test and measurement solutions for 125 years. It engages customers to help develop wireless, optical, microwave/RF and digital solutions for R&D, manufacturing, installation, and maintenance applications, as well as multi-dimensional service assurance solutions for network monitoring and optimisation. Anritsu also provides precision microwave/RF components, optical devices, and high-speed electrical devices for communication products and systems. The company develops advanced solutions for 5G, M2M, IoT, as well as other emerging and legacy wireline and wireless communication markets.
