Nexperia adds extra system safety to integrated 5V load switch

In an expansion of Nexperia’s analogue and logic portfolio, the company has introduced the NPS4053, the first in a load switch family. The high density IC has a small footprint and includes system protection to help increase system reliability, said the company.

Typical applications are in portable devices such as notebook computers, desktops, docking stations and automotive infotainment systems.

Load switches manage current/voltage in a controlled manner from source to the load. In a typical power chain, the NPS4053 is commonly positioned closest to the load for power sequencing and inrush current control and shutting off power islands to conserve power. This feature makes it particularly useful in battery-operated equipment. The NPS4053 as a monolithic device simplifies circuit design and has an 85 per cent smaller PCB footprint than a comparable network of discrete components, said Nexperia.

The NPS4053 operates with an input voltage of 2.5 to 5.5V and contains a 55mOhm self-protected MOSFET to manage the flow of power to the load. This device includes programmable current limiting circuitry allowing precise control of the load current over a range of 110mA to 2.5A with an accuracy of ±six per cent. The device also supports true reverse current blocking, providing robust end-to-end system protection. It also integrates a fault indicator pin that alerts the host controller of a fault event to enhance system monitoring.

The NPS4053 is UL 62368 -recognised. An automotive AEC-Q100-qualified version is also available. Nexperia offers the switch device in both leaded and leadless (HWSON 6) packages.

Headquartered in the Netherlands, Nexperia is a global semiconductor company with over 15,000 employees across Europe, Asia and the United States. It develops and produces semiconductors used in automotive and industrial to mobile and consumer applications.
