Non-isolated flyback switcher ICs exhibit light load operation for small supplies
Off-line, constant voltage (CV), non-isolated flyback switcher ICs in the LinkSwitch-XT2SR series, are claimed to have best-in-class efficiency and light load operation for small power supplies.
Power Integrations’ latest multi-output, off-line switcher ICs have no-load consumption below 5mW to “easily surpass” the requirements of the European Union’s Energy-Related Products (ErP) regulations for standby power operation. They also feature high efficiency of up to 90 per cent for small open frame power supplies.
The ICs deliver 250mW to the load within the 300mW ErP allowance. This allows designers of appliances and industrial systems to operate more system functionality in standby mode.
Capable of delivering up to 15W at 230V AC, LinkSwitch-XT2SR multi-output flyback switcher ICs reduce component count by incorporating a synchronous rectifier driver and an auxiliary, low current, microVcc output to directly supply a microcontroller. Advanced protection and safety features include hysteretic thermal shutdown (OTP) and extended creepage between the drain pin and all other pins, improving field reliability. The 725V MOSFET provides surge withstand performance, while a 900V switch is available for industrial applications and for geographies where fluctuating mains voltages call for extra safety margin.
Power Integrations also offers the RDK-962 reference design kit for a 12W power supply with 90 to 265V AC input and dual 5 .0V / 1.4A and 12V / 0.42A outputs. There is also the DER-963, a design example report which describes an 85 to 265V AC input, 5.0V / 1.0A output, 5W non-isolated flyback converter. The DER-998 design example report details a 90 to 265V AC input, 12V / 1.0A or 6.0V / 1.0A output power supply with 12V or 6.0V selectable output voltage.
