Fibre optic connectors lend support to robotic surgery
In robot-assisted surgical systems, copper lines quickly reach their physical limits in terms of transmission speed with low latency, said ODU. The company is showcasing fibre optic technology at next month’s Compamed exhibition.
In addition to enhanced transmission times, fibre optic technology offers a weight reduction compared to copper as well as EMC compatibility, scalability and
packing density, explained ODU.
The company’s Expanded Beam Performance fibre optc system is claimed to offer high end transmission characteristics with extremely low loss levels over many mating cycles. The optical performance remains unchanged even under mechanical stress, environmental influences and harsh ambient conditions, said the company.
There is no direct contact between the contact ends, continued ODU, which means that Expanded Beam connections are insensitive to contamination and can be easily cleaned. Under normal conditions, a sufficient cleaning rate is up to every 5,000 mating cycles to ensure reliable transmission without any loss in the signal path.
The robust and compact connector, Medi-Snap connector allows configurations of up to 12 fibres in order to accommodate small installation spaces. The ready-made fibre optic system is also available in the AMC Series T, Mini-Snap and ODU-Mac connector models.
